Blues singing and a dramatic voice characteristic of Noh drama may not seem like the most obvious pairing for contrasted thematic material in conventional sonata form, but please consider the short duet recorded here and listen to them sounding together. Both tracks were recorded in my own natural voice, with only a little compression and a pinch of reverb added. For those of you who may have heard me talking about expanding the scope of material within a single work, while avoiding the pitfalls of eclecticism, this is an example. While still honoring economy of means, the contrasted simple elements themselves comprise a broader range of reference than most sonata forms have employed in the past. This is part of my current quartet project for laptop orchestra. Two of the laptops will dedicate themselves to vocal processing in this piece. Thanks for listening!
