Hello LOL,

Here is the first file of a set demonstrating a potential LOL piece.  This is the source material for Theme 1 in what will become the sonata-allegro first movement of a quartet for laptops.

One interesting aspect of this piece is that Theme 1 and Theme 2 are not merely contrasting, but are indeed based on aesthetics from separate cultures.  Theme 1 grows from Japan’s Noh drama tradition, while Theme 2 grows from art song in European Common Practice.

In choosing such disparate elements there is a danger of producing an eclectic jumble rather than coherent contrast, and to that extent, the piece is experimental.  Though art song’s tradition has already incorporated extended techniques more comfortable with presentational drama than bel canto would be, it seems to me composers have been less flexible in using Noh.

Enough talking for now...  I’ll post a notice to the list when there’s a enough material uploaded to offer a clearer idea of what I’m trying to do.
